May 15th -FT Lauderdale Coin Show (3rd Sunday Show)
I spoke to several dealers and was told the show was a little
slow. The bullion market was off because of the
drop in Silver. However, some people took advance of the drip to buy at
the reduced prices. The uncertainty of the bullion market seemed to slow
down the purchasing of all coins.

Miami Coin Show -5/08/2011
The show was a little slow because of Mother’s
Day. We had lower attendance of both
dealers and customers than the month before.
The bullion market was off because of the drop in Silver. However, some people took advance of the drip
to buy at the reduced prices. I sold
fractional currency and type material.
The show was worth my time.

The show had good attendance with good interest in
bullion and (for me) early type coins. I
like to stock low grade early type for those who want an inexpensive example
for their collection. The last few shows
have shown more
interest in this area. This Sunday I
bought & sold Early Type (mostly 2 cent pieces). Pricing for me was good (not great). This was a change from the bullion only
months I have had lately. Bullion was
red hot with Silver & Gold near all time highs. Morgan’s & Peace Dollars were moving at
good prices in all grades. I showed The
Fractional Currency & Continental Currency I bought at the West Palm Beach
Show. Sold some and had good interest in
the others.
I enjoyed talking to my regulars and picked up a
couple more email addresses for the Hollywood & Ft. Lauderdale coin clubs
email list.

Have Fun with Paper Money by Dennis Beasley
Showed DVD Let's
Have Fun with Paper Money at 6:30 until 7:00. We started the meeting at 7:30
with the pledge. Then had Pizza at 7:35. Minutes of
the April 7th meeting was read. Treasurer gave his report and the May 1st Coin
Show report. There was much discussion about the economy and the big drop in
Silver, Silver was at $34.38 that evening. At 8:40 the tickets were drawn and
the meeting adjourned at 8:45.

(I was away visiting my Mother before Mother’s
Day, so Joe & Harry did the presentation this week.) Thanks Joe (&

Ft
Lauderdale Coin Club Meeting-7:00 PM 4/28/2011
Fort Lauderdale Coin Club had its
meeting (2nd & 4th Thurs. nights). Attendance was good with about 40? people. The auction,
which is held every meeting, was very active with a good selection or
cross-section of numismatic material (the price ranged from a couple of dollars
to about 2 hundred (most people were buying in the 10 to 40 dollar range). Denny, William and Milt were their usual
efficient selves in setting up and making this auction happen.
The President (Mark Kaplan) talked about presenting
DVD’s for educational purposes like the Hollywood Coin Club does in its meetings. Hollywood divides its room with a sliding
curtain so members who want to talk and trade coins do not interfere with the
presentation. He spoke to Richard at the
hall and made arrangements for us to present DVD’s in another room. This will start at 6:15 P.M and run to 7:15 P.M. (times may vary)
The regular meeting & auction will start shortly thereafter. I spoke to Joe Zelinski
he has volunteered to provide the projector and speakers for the presentation
(Thanks Joe). The first showing will be
5/28 (not the next meeting -5/14 because of a board meeting). This
format worked out well at Hollywood so we hope to continue presenting these
DVDs at the meetings for the education of our members. The meeting’s DVD- Let’s Have
Fun with Paper Money by Dennis Beasley is Provided
by Tony Swicer of Fun & Palm Beach Coin Club.
It was a good meeting. Hope to see you at the next one.

Palm Beach Coin Show
-4/24/2011
The show was
well attended though a little slow in the morning with approx. 60
Tables/Dealers of Coins. Bullion seemed to be in great demand with silver
at approx. 47.00 dollar per troy oz.
Bullion was “red hot” with Silver Eagles going for 51.00 each in
rolls. Morgan
dollars were in
great demand with prices strongly higher. I also sold and bought low
grade type coins (again), mostly seated liberty type. I bought 2 nice
collections of
Fractional Currency(23 different notes) & Continental
Currency (10 different notes)- for
example: a 1777 Pennsylvania Nine Pence
Colonial Note.
This note
is a great example of a April 10th, 1777 Nine Pence
note from Pennsylvania. This very collectible piece of history
grades approx. Fine. The note was hand signed and numbered and has
faded it some areas. It has nice details and is a Revolutionary War
period issue printed by John Dunlap in Philadelphia. Produced only 10
months after the signing of the Declaration
of Independence! These Notes were used to finance the War for
Independence.

Last Meeting (I Attended) Report:
Well, It didn’t
Happen.
Everyone
that showed up for the Meeting before 6:00 P.M. was told the doors will be locked
at 6:00. So they threw us out. It seems that the contract the previous
President signed for Two Years(up this Dec.) states
that if they have a show on Fri. The
club has to cancel it’s
Thurs. night meeting and the personnel (or city) does not have to aid us in any
way or make available another site. We
asked Ricky if he could help us out, he pointed out in very unfriendly terms it
was above his pay grade and was leaving at 6:00 PM, Also would not give us his bosses Ph
#.
Jacky knows
the city manager and some City officials so we are exploring setting up
channels of communication which may prevent this kind of occurrence in the
future. I feel since we are a regular
source of revenue for the city, they should be more accommodating. If this attitude is what we have to look
forward to with the group in change of this building, I think it is time to look for another
location for our meetings. JMHO

The show was in a new location today- The Polish
American Club on Lake Worth Rd.
Attendance was good for the first time in this location. I thought the room was large with plenty of
room for the dealers and traffic. The
lighting was a little poor. Therefore,
the dealers will have to bring their own lights.
I picked up
several different low grade seated half dollars for
resell at reasonable prices. 1847-O,
1848-O, 1853-O RAYS on rev, 1858-O, 1859-O, 1861, 1863-s, 1864-s,1865-s, 1873, 1877.
I also
learned a little more about buying gold by taking a small loss on the purchase
of a raw 1916-s Au $10 gold piece. I
bought it from a person for slightly above melt in order to have it graded for
resell. When I showed it to Randy
Campbell ( ICG’s grader who was present at the show)
he told me it was a counterfeit. I then
took it to one of the bullion dealers and sold it for the gold value thus
limiting my losses. If Randy was not
there, I would have sent it in for grading thus increasing my losses. I should have showed it to him before the
purchase. Live and learn, as they say.
