- May 15th -FT Lauderdale Coin Show (3rd Sunday Show)

I spoke to several dealers and was told the show was a little slow.  The bullion market was off because of the drop in Silver.  However, some people took advance of the drip to buy at the reduced prices.  The uncertainty of the bullion market seemed to slow down the purchasing of all coins.

Miami Coin Show -5/08/2011

The show was a little slow because of Mother’s Day.  We had lower attendance of both dealers and customers than the month before.  The bullion market was off because of the drop in Silver.  However, some people took advance of the drip to buy at the reduced prices.  I sold fractional currency and type material.  The show was worth my time.

@ Hollywood Coin Show -5/01/2011

The show had good attendance with good interest in bullion and (for me) early type coins.  I like to stock low grade early type for those who want an inexpensive example for their collection.  The last few shows have  shown more interest in this area.  This Sunday I bought & sold Early Type (mostly 2 cent pieces).  Pricing for me was good (not great).   This was a change from the bullion only months I have had lately.  Bullion was red hot with Silver & Gold near all time highs.  Morgan’s & Peace Dollars were moving at good prices in all grades.  I showed The Fractional Currency & Continental Currency I bought at the West Palm Beach Show.  Sold some and had good interest in the others.

I enjoyed talking to my regulars and picked up a couple more email addresses for the Hollywood & Ft. Lauderdale coin clubs email list.

At 8:40 the tickets were drawn and the meeting adjourned at 8:45.

Ft Lauderdale Coin Club Meeting-7:00 PM 4/28/2011

Fort Lauderdale Coin Club had its meeting (2nd & 4th Thurs. nights).  Attendance was good with about 40? people.   The auction, which is held every meeting, was very active with a good selection or cross-section of numismatic material (the price ranged from a couple of dollars to about 2 hundred (most people were buying in the 10 to 40 dollar range).  Denny, William and Milt were their usual efficient selves in setting up and making this auction happen.

The President (Mark Kaplan) talked about presenting DVD’s for educational purposes like the Hollywood Coin Club does in its meetings.  Hollywood divides its room with a sliding curtain so members who want to talk and trade coins do not interfere with the presentation.  He spoke to Richard at the hall and made arrangements for us to present DVD’s in another room.  This will start at 6:15 P.M  and run to 7:15 P.M. (times may vary) The regular meeting & auction will start shortly thereafter.  I spoke to Joe Zelinski he has volunteered to provide the projector and speakers for the presentation (Thanks Joe).  The first showing will be 5/28 (not the next meeting -5/14 because of a board meeting).   This format worked out well at Hollywood so we hope to continue presenting these DVDs at the meetings for the education of our members.  The meeting’s DVD- Let’s Have Fun with Paper Money by Dennis Beasley is Provided by Tony Swicer of Fun & Palm Beach Coin Club.

It was a good meeting.  Hope to see you at the next one.

Show Report:

@ Palm Beach Coin Show -4/24/2011

The show was well attended though a little slow in the morning with approx. 60 Tables/Dealers of Coins.  Bullion seemed to be in great demand with silver at approx. 47.00 dollar per troy oz.  Bullion was “red hot” with Silver Eagles going for 51.00 each in rolls.  Morgan dollars were in great demand with prices strongly higher.  I also sold and bought low grade type coins (again), mostly seated liberty type.  I bought 2 nice collections of  Fractional Currency(23 different notes) & Continental Currency (10 different notes)-  for example: a 1777 Pennsylvania Nine Pence  Colonial Note.

This note is a great example of a April 10th, 1777 Nine Pence note from Pennsylvania.  This very collectible piece of history grades approx. Fine. The note was hand signed and numbered and has faded it some areas.  It has nice details and is a Revolutionary War period issue printed by John Dunlap in Philadelphia. Produced only 10 months after the signing of the Declaration of Independence!   These Notes were used to finance the War for Independence.

DVD Presentation & Discussion which was given at Fun Show- Confessions of a Cherry Picker by Don Bonser

We split the room in two with the sliding curtain in order to allow the people who did not want to hear the presentation, to talk and trade coins in one area, while the DVD was being shown in the other area.  It seemed to work out well.  About 10 people watched the DVD while about 20 others traded coins.  Joe Zelenski brought a projector and speakers, however, I forgot my laptop so we used the TV- DVD setup the center has.  Many thanks, Joe!  Both methods work well.  We started the DVD at 6:30, this allowed us to do the 1 hour presentation before serving pizza at 7:30.  The meeting started shortly after this with open discussions about coin topics throughout the meeting.  6 new guests attended.  We had to wrap up everything by 9:00 (because they close the center at that time).

This format worked out well, so we hope to continue presenting these DVDs at the meetings for the education of our members.   Next meeting’s DVD- Let’s Have Fun with Paper Money by Dennis Beasley

Hope you make the next meeting.  (I will be away visiting my Mother before Mother’s Day, so Joe & Harry will do the presentation this week.)

@ Ft Lauderdale Coin Club Meeting-7:00 PM 4/14/2011

Fort Lauderdale Coin Club had its meeting last night (2nd& 4th Thurs. nights).  Attendance was good with about 50? People.   The auction, which is held every meeting, was very active with a good selection or cross-section of numismatic material (the price ranged from a couple of dollars to over a thousand (most people were buying in the 30 to a hundred dollar range).  Denny, Fred and Milt were their usual efficient selves in setting up and making this auction happen.

The President (Mark Kaplan) talked about presenting DVD’s for educational purposes like the Hollywood Coin Club does in its meetings.  Hollywood divides its room with a sliding curtain so members who want to talk and trade coins do not interfere with the presentation. The details for Ft. Laud. have to be worked out.

The subject of donated money to buy pamphlets for the Boy Scout Coin Collecting Merit Badges was discussed.  Hollywood is donating 50 pamphlets and if anyone would like to donate to this cause please contact me.  Rich Anderson is heading up this effort for the Clubs.  Several of our Club members participate in the judging for these badges and you can see their pictures on the Ft. Lauderdale Coin Club website.

It was a good meeting.  Hope to see you at the next one.

SEE BILL’S COINS @ Miami Coin Show -4/10/2011

A good 1st Show.  This show started a little slow but picked up after Church let out.  It seemed to die off a little after 3.  The attendance was good (Darren’s estimate – 455) enough for me to have as good a day as my 2nd best day at the other shows.  I was able to pay  for the next Miami show from the proceeds of this show and feel the left over proceeds will pay for a nice upgrade in one of my coins.  The dealer mix was about 35 to 40(?) with about 15(?) coins and the others ( collectibles- cards, antiques,& misc).  The interest from the dealers which walked the floor was strong with many asking how to sign up for the next show.  This show is much more convenient than Melbourne for me.

I picked up some Morgans and early type, mostly low grade seated & a 1921 P, G4+ Walking Lib Half.  I sold mostly low grade early type.  The customer mix was young and old, both, with more new collectors than I’m use to seeing.  The language problem (I do not speak Spanish) was not there.  People  interested in my coins always seemed to have a knowledge person with them to ask the  right questions in English.

Overall the show was worth my time and travel.

Counterfeit Detection by Bill Fivaz- DVD Presentation & Discussion which was given at Fun Show-

We split the room in two with the sliding curtain in order to allow the people who did not want to hear the presentation, to talk and trade coins in one area, while the DVD was being shown in the other area.  It seemed to work out well.  About 15 people watched the DVD while about 15 others traded coins.  Joe Zelenski brought a projector and speakers which worked out beautifully.  Many thanks, Joe!  (Joe thinks we can keep using this setup.)  We started the DVD at 6:30, this allowed us to do the 1 hour presentation before serving pizza at 7:30.  The meeting started shortly after this with a board meeting at the end.  We had to wrap up everything by 9:00 (because they close the center at that time).

@ Hollywood Coin Show -4/03/2011

The show had good attendance with good interest in bullion and (for me) early type coins.  I like to stock low grade early type for those who want an inexpensive example for their collection.  The last few shows have  shown very little interest in this area.  This Sunday was different.  I sold a half cent, a two cent, two silver three cents and two Early Quarters ( not all to the same customer).  Pricing for me was good (not great).   This was a change from the bullion only months I have had lately.

I enjoyed talking to my regulars and picked up 9 more email addresses for the Hollywood & Ft. Lauderdale coin clubs email list.

I also picked up 8 more Dealer cards for the Hollywood coin club websites Dealers Cards page.

Please note:  Ft. Lauderdale is having it’s Picnic Apr. 10 (Sat.).  See the Ft Lauderdale Coin Show for info.  I will provide more info in a Email later in the week (when I get It.)

@ Ft Lauderdale Coin Club Meeting-7:00 PM -3/24/2011

Last Meeting (I Attended)  Report:

Well, It didn’t Happen.

Everyone that showed up for the Meeting before 6:00 P.M. was told the doors will be locked at 6:00.  So they threw us out.  It seems that the contract the previous President signed for Two Years(up this Dec.) states that if they have a show on Fri.  The club has to cancel it’s Thurs. night meeting and the personnel (or city) does not have to aid us in any way or make available another site.  We asked Ricky if he could help us out, he pointed out in very unfriendly terms it was above his pay grade and was leaving at 6:00 PM,  Also would not give us his bosses Ph #.

Jacky knows the city manager and some City officials so we are exploring setting up channels of communication which may prevent this kind of occurrence in the future.  I feel since we are a regular source of revenue for the city, they should be more accommodating.  If this attitude is what we have to look forward to with the group in change of this building,  I think it is time to look for another location for our meetings.  JMHO

@ Palm Beach Coin Show -3/27/2011

The show was in a new location today- The Polish American Club on Lake Worth Rd.  Attendance was good for the first time in this location.  I thought the room was large with plenty of room for the dealers and traffic.  The lighting was a little poor.  Therefore, the dealers will have to bring their own lights.

I picked up several different low grade seated half dollars for resell at reasonable prices.   1847-O, 1848-O, 1853-O RAYS on rev, 1858-O, 1859-O, 1861, 1863-s, 1864-s,1865-s, 1873, 1877.

I also learned a little more about buying gold by taking a small loss on the purchase of a raw 1916-s Au $10 gold piece.  I bought it from a person for slightly above melt in order to have it graded for resell.  When I showed it to Randy Campbell ( ICG’s grader who was present at the show) he told me it was a counterfeit.  I then took it to one of the bullion dealers and sold it for the gold value thus limiting my losses.  If Randy was not there, I would have sent it in for grading thus increasing my losses.  I should have showed it to him before the purchase.  Live and learn, as they say.

I had a good show ( I always do, because I get to talk coins with my friends).  Carl Explained the differences in a regular 1799 and a irregular date Bust Dollar- I have a BB-160 Anacs VF35.  Unfortunately, Harry was unable to be at this Show.   He will be at the Palm Beach Show next Week ( as will I).  Cedric was Wheeling and Dealing as per usual.  Hope to see you at the new location of the Palm Beach Show.  Bill
